Itinerary
Day 5
Wednesday July
28
Today, a travel day through gorgeous country, places you into key position
at the base of the Bitterroots for your foot journey to the top in the
morning. A few Lewis & Clark surprise stops are in order before you
arrive Lochsa Lodge, our favorite lodge with rustic cabins nestled along the
Lochsa River, (Nez Perce: means rough water). If you prefer not to
hike up the mountain tomorrow, an equally enjoyable choice offers you van
transportation to the top. Stopping at 13 Mile Camp and
Rocky Point Lookout (photo above) for interpretation, you can see your
upcoming (and Lewis and Clark's) journey from a birds-eye view. This
evening enjoy a special visit from Meriwether Lewis around the campfire at
the lodge.

Day 6
Thursday
July 29
A great day of adventure
and discovery! Your hike this morning is an eight mile hike uphill, a 3000
foot climb in elevation, the same area 33 men of the Expedition Corps
climbed September 15, 1805. Enjoy readings from "the Journals" by Clay
Jenkinson. Tonight's camp is also an Expedition site named Snowbank
- where they camped and melted snow for their water. Like the Corps,
you will "take an early supper" you have earned it. Unlike the Corps,
it will be hearty. Evening enjoyment will be dialogue around the camp
circle and later the quiet of nature!

Day 7
Friday
July 30
Although you are now
standing in very remote high mountainous terrain,(7000 feet), you will find
numerous sites, (mostly, but not exclusively Lewis & Clark), to explore and
enjoy with interpretation and journals read by Clay Jenkinson: Bear
Oil and Roots, Indian Post Office, Lonesome Cove, The Sinque Hole, The
Smoking Place and more. for those with energy to burn, our
traditional sunset hike to the top of Bald Mountain will be
available. Not only beautiful, it exposes the same scenes the Corps
most likely witnessed of the Lochsa, Selway and Clearwater River drainages
and the camas prairies off in the distance.

Day 8
Saturday
July 31
"Coming down off the
mountain" can take you weeks after you return to your home. Mentally
this is your challenge, physically we make it easy for you. Your hike
or van transportation down begins after breakfast. Magic grows if you
allow some distance on the trail between you and your mate in front and
behind you. Your senses awaken! As you descend through the
elevations watch the tree types changing, feel the temperature zones
adjusting and listen to the sounds and beauty of nature as you cross several
creeks before you reach the bottom. A hearty lunch and the Lochsa
River are waiting, ready for you to dive in! This evening enjoy your
finale with our traditional farewell dinner party at the lodge.
