Itinerary
Day 1
Saturday
August 04
Welcome to Great Falls, Montana! Gather this evening for a
welcome reception by your tour host and scholar, Clay S. Jenkinson.
After a quick orientation meeting with your Missouri River outfitter, you
will depart for Ryan Dam. Enjoy your first evening with Clay as he takes you back in time, on location where Captain
Meriwether Lewis found the western landscape mightier than his pen.
LODGING: La Quinta Inn Riverfront, Great Falls,

Day 2
Sunday
August 05
Today begins your journey
through landscape Lewis properly labeled "seens of visionary enchantment"
But first you take a look at "Decision Point" at the Marias river. You can see for yourself the
difficulty the captains had deciding which river was the correct river to
follow. The launch of your three day river tour begins at Coal
Banks Landing. You will have plenty of opportunities to hike
through some very beautiful landscapes along the Missouri River. Some
offer petroglyphs, others teepee rings. While your evening dinner is
being prepared you have
an opportunity to explore Slot Canyon where nature carved a
playground just for you out of the sandstone to climb through and in and
outside of. Here you can play! Your evening ends with delicious food served along the bank of the river and
campfire discussions with Clay Jenkinson.

Day 3
Monday
August 06
As your day of canoeing
begins you can look back and see that last night you actually were camped
inside of one of Karl Bodmer's famous paintings. Ten miles
downstream you arrive at The Hole-in-the-Wall rock formation. This
is offers a fabulous hike and scenes to feast your eyes in every direction.
There is no way to explain the wonder here. Lewis, nor Clark, nor Maximilian,
nor Bodmer witnessed what you see if you take this hike. With your morning hike and lunch behind you, the next 11 miles float you
past Steamboat Rock and other majestic sandstone formations.
This evening Clay Jenkinson ties the connection of Prince Maximilian and his famous
Swiss artist Karl Bodmer to the Lewis & Clark Trail.

Day 4
Tuesday
August 07
What a great day!
After breakfast paddling 11 miles stopping at Judith Landing for
lunch you observe the
river canyon change from vertical sandstone rock to wider and deeper river
bluffs. This area is commonly referred to as "The Breaks."
Your canoe strolls you past the magic of many cottonwood groves and Lewis & Clark's campsite of May 28, 1805. Mid-afternoon welcomes you with a hot shower and a first-class hotel
along the bank of the Missouri River in Ft. Benton, Montana. The Grand Union
Hotel, Montana's oldest, was built in 1882, seven years before Montana
became a state. Enjoy fine dining, music and a river stroll reading
about this Montana town's historical past.
