Itinerary
Day 5
Wednesday August
08
Today, a travel day through gorgeous country. You are getting into key
position at the base of the Bitterroot Mountains for your foot journey to
the top tomorrow
morning, up Wendover Ridge. A few Lewis & Clark surprise stops are in
order before you arrive Lochsa Lodge, our favorite lodge with rustic cabins
nestled along the Lochsa River, (Nez Perce for rough water). If you prefer not to
hike up the mountain tomorrow, an equally enjoyable choice offers you van
transportation to the top. Your van will make stops at 13 Mile Camp and
Rocky Point Lookout (photo above) for interpretation. You can see
the trail of the Nez Perce and Lewis & Clark from a birds-eye view. This
evening, under the stars, enjoy a special visit from Meriwether Lewis around the campfire at
Lochsa Lodge.

Day 6
Thursday
August 09
A great day of adventure
and discovery! Your eight and a half mile hike uphill, a 3000
foot climb in elevation, is the same area 33 men of the Expedition Corps
climbed September 15, 1805. Enjoy readings from "the Journals" by Clay
Jenkinson. Tonight's camp is also an Expedition site named Snowbank, where they camped and melted snow for their water. Like the Corps,
you will "take an early supper" you have earned it. Unlike the Corps,
it will be hearty and no snow to melt. Evening enjoyment will be dialogue around the camp
circle and later the quiet of nature!

Day 7
Friday
August 10
Although you are now
standing in very remote high mountainous terrain,( approx.7000 feet), you will find
numerous sites, (mostly, but not exclusively Lewis & Clark), to explore and
enjoy with interpretation and journals read by Clay Jenkinson: Bear
Oil and Roots, Indian Post Office, Lonesome Cove, The Sinque Hole, The
Smoking Place and more. For those with energy to burn, our
traditional sunset hike to the top of Bald Mountain will be
available. Not only beautiful, it exposes the same mountain scenes and
drainages the Corps
most likely witnessed: The Lochsa, the Selway and the Clearwater River drainages
of Idaho's Clearwater and Nez Perce National Forests, and the Selway
Bitterroot Wilderness Area in the distance.

Day 8
Saturday
August 11
When the end of the
infamous Bitterroot range finally came, the Corps beheld a flat prairie
landscape repose below. What a great place to end your own mountain
exploration looking down at the same camas prairie that Lewis & Clark
witnessed 200+ years ago. Enjoy grazing on mountain huckleberries as
you hike to the top. After lunch, you begin your hike or van ride
down off the mountain. Your senses awaken! As you descend
through the elevations, watch the tree types changing, feel the temperature
zones adjusting and listen to the sounds and beauty of nature as you cross
several creeks before reaching the bottom, a 3000' descent in three very
short hours. Hearty snacks, the Lochsa River and ice cold beverages await
you to dive in!

Day 9
Sunday
August 12
After breakfast, man
your boat. Enjoy yet another opportunity to embrace the beauty of
nature as you float the calm, scenic waters of the beautiful Clearwater
river. After a nice lunch, you wind back along the
Clearwater and Lochsa Rivers to Lochsa Lodge. Enjoy your
afternoon to explore or relax on your own. This evening enjoy our
traditional Farewell Dinner Party and saying goodbye to new friends.
