Explore John Steinbeck country with humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson. Your guest cottage is within walking distance of the Point Pinos Lighthouse and the Pacific tide pools where Steinbeck and his closest friend Ed Ricketts waded in search of the interconnected meaning of life. Each day begins with a discussion of Steinbeck’s greatest works (Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat, The Grapes of Wrath), but the rest of the day we will visit Steinbeck sites, including the National Steinbeck Center, where you will be able to examine the camper van (Rocinante) that Steinbeck drove in search of America in 1960. On the first night, a news conference with John Steinbeck himself (portrayed by Clay Jenkinson). California was Steinbeck’s Muse. Our goal is to experience the spirit of place of one of America’s most beautiful landscapes through the eyes of one of America’s greatest artists. Hikes, music, great food, good wine, and delightful conversation.
